چکیده

During the past few years, patients with an unidentified acute febrile illness have appeared on the wards of the New Haven Hospital. They present similar signs and symptoms. We have been unable to recognize this syndrome as that of any of the known infectious diseases. We believe that it may be a new disease and we are taking this opportunity to report eleven cases seen in the past five years, including one small family epidemic. The disease is characterized by fever, a uniform absence of prostration, malaise, a red-brown maculo-papular skin eruption, varying degrees of general lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and leukopenia with relative lym-phocytosis but without any consistent pathologic cytology. Fig. 1 summarizes the important data.

Seroconversion to human herpesvirus 6 and human herpesvirus 7 among Brazilian children with clinical diagnoses of measles or rubella.

We collected acute-phase and convalescent-phase serum samples from Brazilian patients who presented with exanthem of unknown origin and evaluated these samples by means of an immunoblot assay for seroconversion to human herpesvirus 6 (HIV-6) or human herpesvirus 7 (HIV-7). Measles or rubella had been clinically diagnosed in all these patients, but their sera were negative for antibodies to both...

Many clinical and laboratory-based studies have been reported for skin rashes which may be due to viral infections, namely pityriasis rosea (PR), Gianotti-Crosti syndrome (GCS), asymmetric periflexural exanthem/unilateral laterothoracic exanthem (APE/ULE), papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome (PPGSS), and eruptive pseudo-angiomatosis (EP). Eruptive hypomelanosis (EH) is a newly discovered...

Reappearance of Chikungunya, Formerly Called Dengue, in the Americas

After an absence of ≈200 years, chikungunya returned to the American tropics in 2013. The virus is maintained in a complex African zoonotic cycle but escapes into an urban cycle at 40- to 50-year intervals, causing global pandemics. In 1823, classical chikungunya, a viral exanthem in humans, occurred on Zanzibar, and in 1827, it arrived in the Caribbean and spread to North and South America. In...
